In the previous edition, we concluded on the note that prevailing prayer brings divine attention but today, I want to share with you by the inspiration of the Holy spirit that prevailing prayer will give you VICTORY WITHOUT FIGHTING.
Few years back, I saw one of the Bishop Benson Idahosa’s (a prominent preacher in Nigeria) message titled “Winning war without fighting”. As I was meditating on that word, I suddenly discovered that it is truly possible to win in the battles of life without fighting. God is committed to responding to the pleading of His people and perform great triumphs through prevailing prayers. God has decreed to make the prayers of His people the cause of His triumph in many battles, He said;
“Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not” Jer. 33:3KJV
One of the major great things He is committed to showing us is to give us victory over the giant we cannot conquer all by ourselves. This He confirmed to us again through the Psalmist;
“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.” Ps.91:15 KJV
The Lord is committed to fighting those who are fighting you in order to honor Himself in your life. This was evidenced in the life of Hezekiah, when the great and terrible King of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them. Jerusalem was left isolated against hundreds of thousands of armed Assyrian soldiers. All there was in Jerusalem was a frightened people, a prophet named Isaiah, and a praying king – Hezekiah (Isaiah 36).
This terrible king began to threaten Hezekiah and his people that no one, not even God can rescue them from his hand, but in the midst of all these troubles, the scripture says;
“And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. {blasphemy: or, provocation} It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left. {left: Heb. found} So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.” Isaiah 37:1-7 KJV
As Hezekiah sought the face of God with all his heart, the Lord responded and assured him of victory but yet, the enemies never desist. This is where many of us missed it, we give up too early. Whenever we pray a little prayer and receive God’s promises, we quickly close our mouth and begin to watch the enemies destroying what we are building with prayers. It was after Hezekiah had received the promise that the enemy roar again, he sent message to him saying;
“Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?” Isaiah 37:10-13 KJV
Beloved, as you begin to travail in prayer, HUMANLY SPEAKING SITUATION MAY BEGIN TO GET MORE DIFFICULT, IT IS NOT THAT GOD IS NOT ATTENDING TO YOU, IT IS THE DEVIL TRYING TO STOP YOU FROM PREVAILING. SO DON’T GIVE UP ON GOD, HE IS WORKING ON YOUR SITUATION. It was on this understanding that Hezekiah turned to God again.
“And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries, {nations: Heb. Lands. And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. {cast: Heb. given} Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.” Isaiah 37:14-20KJV
Implicit in Hezekiah’s prayer is that God cannot be defeated; He has made heaven and earth. There is an evidence trust and faith in Hezekiah’s prayer: “ The Lord alone is God, the maker of all things and ruler of all things. He cannot be defeated”. And indeed, God proved him right. Beloved, the major barrier to your desired miracle is prayerlessness, though you may feel you have prayed but the answer is not forthcoming. Yes, it is because you have not prevailed with God over that matter.
God with infinite power and knowledge is committed to respond to the pleading of His people. I caught a profound insight from one of John Wesley statement as I read in one of Rev. Kenneth Haggin’s book that “it seems God is limited by our prayer life – that He can do nothing for humanity unless someone asks Him” (Kenneth Haggin; The art of intercession, published by Rhema bible church c 1981, pg 1). Pastor Asaaju Ologunloluwa buttressed that statement by saying; “the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men (Dan.4:32). Yes, He does, but He does that by the prayer of His saints. Though God is omnipotent and can and would do anything but he has conditioned Himself that He wouldn’t do anything on the planet earth other than what His saints require him to do through their prayer. Prayer therefore has made the saints of God the vice rulers with God. In prayer a saint of God can have power to move God.” ( Asaaju Ologunloluwa, Seven-fold power of prayer 1, Web teaching 001/0704, April 2004. Beloved, If you will only make up your mind to prevail in prayer, you will see His great and mighty works in your life.
