After speaking at a youth gathering, a young brother commented that Christians were so familiar with the word “altar” in the Old Testament and whenever people honored the altar by obeying the ordinances of God, they usually experienced a unique manifestation of God’s power. He then asked me what Christians in this present age needed to do in order to move God to action like the old testament days.
Brethren, the answer to this question is for the spiritual deformity of the church (I mean the body of Christ) to be cured. Throughout the Old Testament, God’s manifestation was always attached to the altar. Any tribe or congregation without a viable altar will not taste of God’s supernatural powers because supernatural manifestations are a by-product of consistency at the altar.
An altar is a place where we encounter and have contact with the divine life and nature of God. A man by the altar will always be at home with God. The altar also provokes God’s involvement, empowerment and appointment to one’s life. This is grace. The miracles that happened in the ministry of Elijah was a product of the building of a personal altar. Elijah could control the affairs of the land not because he was a politician or a financially influential person, but because he was a man by the altar. Oswald J. Sanders said “We have long been praying like Elisha; where is the God of Elijah?” But now, where are the Elijahs of God? For the God of Elijah remains unchanged”6.
Many Christians desire to be the Elijah of our time; controlling the elements, law of nature and stirring up the hearts of men to seek after God. But VERY FEW are ready to conform their ways of life to that of Elijah’s. When all the true Prophets of God hid themselves from the devil, only Elijah stood to confront Ahab. Unlike many of us today, he could pull this out not because he was courageous or strong-headed but because he had great faith. Faith here is not taking a risk, being strong-headed or boldly confessing but obediently doing what God said. Faith is not yet faith until you hear from God and act on that word. You cannot hear from God until you commune with God neither can you commune with him without building a personal altar.
“And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, ”As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word. “Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. ”And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there. “So he went and did according to the word of the LORD, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. “I Kg 17: 1-5 NKJV
One may have thought that Elijah uttered these words because he was furious about the idolatry of the land but no, it was a proclamation of the instruction he was given at the altar,
“As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand…”
He became so brave that he single handedly confronted a king, who had silenced hundreds of prophets before him, as a result of his personal altar. He positioned himself to worship and serve the Lord in solitude at Gilead when others were worshiping and serving their king. While others were busy speaking with themselves and holding meetings in the cave, he was discussing with the Lord. Not too long after this, God beheld him like Abraham and decided not to hide His plan from Him. It suddenly pleased the Lord to unravel His intention and he gave him a message to Ahab. What a good soldier of the Lord! Elijah instantly obeyed his Master’s order. No wonder God never deniedhis requests because He is committed to sustaining whosoever he ordains.
Beloved, do you hunger to taste more of the supernatural? Do you still thirst to be used of God to stir up the heart of men unto righteousness and to turn the world upside down for the expansion of his kingdom? Do you hunger for the fullness of His anointing and power and for spiritual enrichment to make waves for God? Then you need to build a personal altar.
