In the previous edition, we had discussed on why we need to be fervent in the spirit. By the grace of God, I will start sharing from this series, the practical steps TO BECOME OR REMAIN FERVENT IN SPIRIT. The first step is…
1. . Spiritual Disciplines
Spiritual disciplines are the basic steps that we take in order to become FERVENT in SPIRIT. Richard Foster’ wrote in one of his book, Celebration of Discipline, that
To be spiritually discipline is to place yourself before God so that he can transform you.
Correct key is essential to opening the closed door, but just as you holding the key can not put the door open until you insert it into the necessary hole and do the turning, your spiritual discipline can not bring fire to your spirit until it is backed up with the right attitude and complete submission to God.
It is not your spiritual activity that will make you fervent in spirit as it is not the key in your hand that will make the door open, Yet you can not be fervent without engaging in spiritual activity. Permit me to repeat that statement;
IT IS NOT YOUR SPIRITUAL ACTIVITY THAT WILL MAKE YOU FERVENT IN SPIRIT AS IT IS NOT THE KEY IN YOUR HAND THAT WILL MAKE THE DOOR OPEN, YET YOU CAN NOT BE FERVENT WITHOUT ENGAGING IN SPIRITUAL ACTIVITY.
Spiritual activities are means by which we can make a connection with God. It will put your soul near the fire of God who can impact his fire into your spirit,
“1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts. 6 Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: 7 And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.” Isaiah 6 : 1 – 7
Isaiah was able to see God because he set himself apart from distraction, and that is what spiritual discipline is all about.
Spiritual discipline is an act of discipline yourself or sacrificing your pleasures to engage in spiritual activities such as prayers, fasting, studying the word of God and the likes.
Although, if your spirit is not boiling, you can not feel like engaging in such activities, and that is why being fervent in the spirit needs SERIOUS DISCIPLINE .
You have to discipline yourself to pray even when you do not feel like praying. You have to read the Word of God to listen to His voice because our spirits are lukewarm. We must memorize scripture (which is a form of meditation) because we don’t desire to think about God’s truth. The absence of desire is all the more reason to put ourselves near the fire so that God can boil our spirit.
